So, calories, what are they? ?
Calories are a measure of the FUEL or ENERGY in our food ⚡
When we consume calories, we put fuel into our body
There are TWO things to consider when talking about calories
1️⃣ CALORIE QUANTITY ⚖️
How many calories does the food contain?
2️⃣ CALORIE QUALITY
How healthy are those calories?
These two concepts are OFTEN confused as ALWAYS being inversely related
I.e. high-quality foods are ALWAYS low-in-calories
And low-quality foods are ALWAYS high-in-calories
Whilst this IS often the case – it’s NOT always
Take an avocado, for example ? healthy but also calorific
Equally, consider a Diet Coke ? low-calorie but no health benefits
Clearly, calorie QUANTITY vs. calorie QUALITY isn’t black & white
